Visual communication design brings together essential human activities:
relationships,personal expression, and the pursuit of meaning and beauty.

I find inspiration in studio classes, where curiosity, research, and experimentation are encouraged. I emphasize the balance of intuitive design and analytical critique as a significant characteristic of the design process. I am driven to help students understand commonalities in visual expression within a culture and throughout history, and to interpret them meaningfully for a specific goal.

Good design is an aid to good community life. My hope is that this classroom experience will be a solid foundation for the student’s contribution to public life, and towards continued growth in this ever-changing and multifaceted profession. The occasions when I can refer to my own work are opportunities to show an application of these ideas developed in the classroom.

Joan is an Assistant Professor in the School of  Visual Communication Design, teaching since 1982. She has taught introductory-level design courses, including:

Joan has done work for regional businesses and nonprofit organizations. Her calligraphy and handmade books are part of private collections across the country. She is a founding board member of The Artists Network of Kent (TANK), which advocates for a thriving environment for the visual arts with the city government and business and service organizations.
