The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Visual Communication Design is a liberal arts degree focusing on art and design in the context of a broad program of general studies.
Following a successful Junior Review, students may continue into the fourth and final year of the 129 credit-hour Bachelor of Arts degree, which includes 15 additional semester credit hours in the major. In addition, the program requires that students complete an internship, a 300-hour, off-campus experience that allows the student to apply theory to a professional situation. According to the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Visual Communication Design is the professional degree focusing on intensive work in the visual arts supported by a program of general studies.
Students who attain a 2.75 GPA in all major courses may choose to pursue the five-year, professional, 137 credit-hour Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Students may select among concentrations in two-dimensional graphic design, three-dimensional graphic design, or illustration. In addition to the major requirements for the four-year Bachelor of Arts degree, these students must complete 12 credit hours of required coursework in practical, theoretical, and technical subjects in their chosen concentration.
The program requires that students complete an internship, which places them in a work environment for a minimum of 300 hours. This real-world experience complements the theoretical emphasis of the academic coursework and assures that students are prepared to enter the professional world of visual communication design.
BFA degree students must also choose the option of either a Minor or a Senior Project. Both options require a 1 credit hour Senior Research Proposal and a 2 credit hour Senior Research Paper (a university writing-intensive course requirement.) All BFA degree students must complete a professional portfolio preparation course.
