SPECIAL PROGRAMS :: Glyphix
VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN, AT ITS MOST EFFECTIVE, SHOULD COMMUNICATE INTELLIGENTLY AND APPROPRIATELY TO THE INTENDED AUDIENCE. SOLVING CLIENT-BASED DESIGN REQUIREMENTS IS A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE DESIGNERS' TASK. IN GLYPHIX, A SELECT GROUP OF VCD STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THEIR DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO REAL PROJECTS WHILE WORKING TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENT RESULTS FOR CLIENTS.
Glyphix student design studion produces award-winning, professional-level design work in an education setting. The studio serves both on-campus groups and off-campus businesses. The Glyphix tradition has been to provide design services for community groups such as non-profit organizations, schools, libraries, and government groups. Created in 1973, Glyphix was one of the first such programs in the U.S. and the prototype for many student work-study design groups now existing on university campuses. The 1250-square-foot facility has a conference room and a studio with ten digital workstations. Glyphix provides a truly professional atmosphere, both in philosophy and in physical space.
Students who participate in the studio must be recommended by the VCD faculty and apply for the limited positions. The experience earns credit hours toward graduation, and can be taken as an elective class or as an internship. Both graduate-level students and undergraduate seniors are involved in running the studio. Teamwork is a crucial component in the success of any design studio, and students gain valuable insight into their ability to work with others during the creative process in this unique setting. Participants have the opportunity to experience real-world design projects, work with clients and vendors, and discover the process of applying their design skills to a variety of job situations.Visit the Glyphix web site to view some of the work designed by Glyphix staff.
